The Theme of Death in Poetry by Emily Dickinson and Sylvia...

Death is a prevalent theme in the poetry of both Sylvia Plath and Emily Dickinson. They both examine death from varied angles. There are many similarities as well as differences in the representation of this theme in their poetry. Plath views death as a sinister and intimidating end, while Dickinson depicts death with the endearment of romantic attraction. In the poetry of Plath death is depicted traditionally, while Dickinson attributes some mysticism to the end of life. In the poem Two Views of a Cadaver Room Plath attempts to be objective in writing about death from the third person point of view. The poem is divided into two verses: the first verse depicts four men examining human corpses, the second verse speaks about†¦show more content†¦However, the author regrets for not being able to reach such condition being alive. Dickinson admires death as a perfect state of calmness of the mind while Plath use imagery to represent the horrific nature of death as a force which destroys the mind and life in the body. Plath believes that death leads to absence of emotions. Death takes away emotions and feelings, therefore it is the process of dehumanization, as Plath has written he hands her the cut-out heart like a cracked heirloom. Heirlooms are objects which embody the memory just like heart does which is the symbol of the persons identity. Death kills this identity. Death is self-destruction of the individual which should not be admired according to the poetry of Plath. Death means pain and suffering. The author also talks about individuals who chose the death themselves. It is especially evident in the poems Edge and I Am Vertical: her bare feet seem to be saying; we have come so far (Edge). The bare feet are the symbol of the authors vulnerability which is the result of the lack of protection by society. The depiction of death in this poem is sometimes compared to the Sigmund Freuds explanation of the self destruction. In Act 1 of â€Å"An Inspector Calls† how does J.B Priestley use dramatic devices to convey his concerns and ideas to members of the audience as well as interest them and involve them in the play. â€Å"An Inspector Calls† was written in 1945 but the play was set in 1912, a few years before the First World War. The place it was set was an imaginary industrial West Midland town called Brumley. The play talks about the class structure in 1912. â€Å"An Inspector Calls† shows how big a gap there was between the rich and the poor. Priestley was against the class system. He shows the audience that the society had been divided into three categories; the upper class, the middle class and the working class. J.B Priestley was a social reformer. The audience realise that the play starts off with a jolly introduction, talking about a normal upper-class family who were just celebrating their daughter’s engagement, to a serious place. The audience’s body language changes from attracting to the play to retracting from the play. Another device used by J.B Priestley is sound. He uses sound on the stage to engage the audience. When the Inspector arrives we hear a â€Å"sharp ring on the doorbell.† This is important because the atmosphere changes from here. Edna informs the party†...an inspector has called.† The bell makes the audience ask questions like; â€Å"Why is an Inspector here?† and â€Å"Is someone in trouble?† Priestley uses stage directions as another dramatic device which helps show the way the characters speak to each other. It shows how the characters must act, directs emotion and creates tension. India has been a country where males have dominated society and oppressed the fairer sex. Only recently have things changed and currently India has its first woman president. This domination has caused women to actually believe that they are indeed inferior to men. It is therefore not surprising to find women content with the subservient life they were forced to lead, like in Mulk Raj Anand’s ‘The Coolie’ where in Munoo’s village, his aunt â€Å"†¦had done the housework herself, untiringly uncomplainingly and quietly. But in stark contrast, to find women voicing their opinions, or acting against the norms of society does shock the average Indian because examples are few and far between. Interestingly therefore, I was surprised to find that out of nine Indian novels that I read I found women with strong characters in six. The strength of these women can be categorized into three distinct groups with two books under each subdivision. The first category would consist of women with strong will powers, the second would describe women who fought against society and the final category would comprise of women who committed homicide.The first example of undaunted will power is in Sharat Chandra’s ‘Queen’s Gambit’ aka ‘Chandranath’ where the daughter of a widow who eloped with a man is married to a rich village Brahmin, only for the villagers to oppose the union with the husband following suit. He refuses to eat from her â€Å"†¦filthy hands†¦Ã¢â‚¬  Despite being pregnant, the wife quietly walks away from her husband’s life and begins life afresh in the company of an old chess player. The author clearly describes the troubles in the relationship of each of the families and nobody knows who the killer can be, only that it is someone among them.
